Photo 4 charity presented #Pose4AcauseUG again! This time supporting shantiuganda.org. I was glad to have attended as I got to know of SHANTI UGANDA, a maternity center in Nsaasi village, Kasana Luwero district.
I talked with Trine, whose been working at Shanti for a year and half as a project coordinator, she told me that the 5 year old center is based on the foundation of mother centered care were they want to create a home environment for pregnant women. They have six midwives, a laboratory where HIV, malaria and UTI’s are tested. They do up to 30 deliveries and receive over 300 women a month.
I was in awe to hear that they only charge a fee of 7000 Ugandan shillings per mother for Ante natal, Post-natal and delivery. Trine said it’s because they want every pregnant woman to have a safe delivery without worrying whether they can afford it or not. They also provide mother kits and baby clothes to women who cannot afford them.
The women get involved in various activities like: nutrition workshops that happen twice a month, Immunizations every Thursday for the pregnant mothers and infants, Prenatal Yoga also every Thursday led by Flora a yoga trainer who is also a doula. They also have an HIV Positive group with 21 women who started 7 years before Shanti; they do textile and beading products that they sell abroad to raise money.
“If you want to see Shanti in action come on Thursday.” Trine said smiling.
Even with all the hard work, shanti faces some challenges like the feeder roads when it rains, the roads flood so it makes it difficult for pregnant women to access the center
Nsaasi village has no power, and not enough water. The center uses only four solar panels. They also have a water tank but during the drought season, it becomes difficult for them to attain water.

Shanti Uganda will always be there for the women of Nsaasi in Luwero. How about you think of how you can be there for SHANTI UGANDA.
