PREMIERE OF SLAY QUEENS OF AFRICA

The premiere of SLAY QUEENS OF AFRICA, a satirical musical happened on the 14th and 15th April 2018 at The Square in Kampala, Uganda.

The musical takes us on a satirical journey as we discover the lives of Slay queens in Lagos Nigeria, Harare Zimbabwe, Nairobi Kenya and Kampala Uganda.   The performers were Namulondo Rashida, Nabasa Linda, Kagisha Debie and Alexander Tyson.

Rehema Nanfuka was the director and she did an amazing job at that. She brought out the best in the performers and challenged them with tasks that helped them know and play the different characters better. The music was beautifully written and played by Kaz Kasozi and his band. The songs were catchy,  witty and funny.

Oliver and Vicent were stage managers who did a tremendous job at making sure that all props, costumes were ready at stage entries and exits. The performancers all together had over 20 costume, jewellery, wigs and foot wear changes. Once the show commenced,  the back stage was quietly chaotic.  Withan over all white audience, it came down to the ticket price that saw many locals unable to afford.

The team explained this, “Slay Queens of Africa was costly to produce. We were unable to get financial support so we had to raise the ticket price.” Nonetheless the audience said the musical was worth their  money and time.

Afroman Spice will stage Slay Queens of Africa again, this time they hope to attract support so that the tickets are more affordable to the general public.

KAMPALA ART AUCTION

Four days ago I received an email- invitation from Violet Nantume to attend the 2nd Kampala Art Auction, 14th October at the Serena Hotel.
The email reminded me of the very first art auction event I had attended in 2015. An Art Auction at  Ambrosoli International school by grade three kids selling their crayon and colored pencil art to  parents and well-wishers.

Anyway It’s the D-day and 4 hours to the auction,I get a call from Sandra requesting me to be the master of ceremony.

“Were you prepared?” You may ask me  “No, not really, but am always up for a challenge, besides I dont mind having more than thirty people looking at my pretty face.”

I was in awe of all the 36 artists from Uganda,Rwanda ,Kenya, DRC Turkey,Belgium ,South Sudan,Ethiopia that were featured.

I opened the evening with a poem that I had written one hour to the event. Like some of the art pieces that were auctioned,my poem is untitled.

UNTITLED

What stands behind you are stories
straight forward,
but also confusing,
brushed carefully,
to remind you,
of images you had forgotten,
of things you are yet to discover.

The art behind you,
Is expensive.
I don’t mean the prices but the time
Spent by each artist dyeing colors, painting angles and perspectives,
to share with you their dreams, hope, loss, grief and happiness.

What stands behind you ought to stand on the front wall of your living room,
Office corridor,
Bedroom center space,
your home,
To inspire you.
Provoke you.
Confuse you.
But still be crystal clear.

The art pieces displayed tonight are not only by men,
But also by women.
All artists and visionaries.
Art is their bread winner
so may you accept their art pieces to talk to you tonight.
And as you look at the art,
Think of the art,
May it take you to school and back.
May it teach you and also un-teach you the things you have been wrongly taught.
May the art tonight steal your heart
but to some I hope your heart will be entirely and eternally found by this art.
I welcome you to the 2nd Kampala art auction.

So let me show you great art
